Weather & Seasons
Capitol Reef shines in every season. Spring and fall bring mild temperatures ideal for hiking and, in fall, the Fruita orchard harvest. Summers are hot with afternoon monsoon storms that can trigger flash floods in the canyons. Winters are cold and quiet, with snow occasionally dusting the slickrock and Boulder Mountain.
View forecast →Getting There
Capitol Reef is located in south-central Utah, about 3.5 hours from Salt Lake City and roughly 5 hours from Las Vegas. The nearest gateway town is Torrey, about 11 miles west of the visitor center on Highway 24, with most of the area's lodging, dining, and outfitters. There is no park shuttle, so plan to drive the paved Scenic Drive and Highway 24 corridor yourself.
Best Time to Visit
April through May and September through October are the sweet spots, with mild weather and, in fall, the fruit harvest in the Fruita orchards. Book lodging in Torrey early for these months. If you want solitude, try the winter quiet of December through February, when crowds thin out and snow contrasts beautifully with the red Waterpocket Fold cliffs.
